Velocity: Snack Attack Game (2018)

What is Velocity?

Velocity® is a revolutionary K-5 English Language Arts solution that extends the teacher’s reach and guides students along individualized learning paths. Velocity’s adaptive learning system provides real-time differentiation by adjusting content in-the-moment, thereby delivering the exact instruction a student needs exactly when he or she needs it.

Key Goal?

The goal was to create a content flexible practice activity that utilizes game mechanics and helps students build automaticity in a variety of skills.

My Role.

We already had established program look and feel and characters. The trick to this was creating a concept and set of mechanics that would support multiple domain skills and content. I worked on a small working team that was composed of a software engineer and an instructional designer. I led design and concept workshops, did the UX work, and created the final designs.

Final Concept:

In Velocity every student has a guide who helps them through the program. The guides interact with world specific characters in various activities. In this game, the guide is trying to eat a snack. Rows of ice blocks descend from the bridge and the student will hear a key word. The student must select that keyword before the blocks hit the ground(or another block). Every-time a student misses a word, the antagonist gets closer and closer to reaching the bridge. It's a race against time to finish the snack!

Timeline?

From start to working prototype, we spend 3 weeks creating this activity. The project collapsed prior to incorporating this project into our content management system.

This project was supported by previous work efforts such as the code based animation system I advocated for and planned with our engineering team, as well as visual and concept design I directed.
